The most popular batteries are lead-acid batteries in all their variants (lead-calcium, lead-acid, lead-gel) and constitute the oldest battery technology even if instead lithium batteries are not a recent discovery (it is recent instead, their use on a large scale), in fact the manufacture of the first lithium batteries dates back to 1912.

Which are the main differences between a lead acid battery and a lithium battery?

And which battery technology to choose for the reel pushers in the converting industry for example or in the wire&cable industry?

Lead acid batteries have a low cost and perhaps for this reason they have been more used up to now than lithium batteries.

But let’s now examine other features and benefits:

Weight

Lead acid battery: its mass is 30 kg per kWh

Lithium battery: its mass is 9 kg per kWh. 3 times lighter than a lead acid battery.

Physical space

If you compare the two battery technologies – one lithium and the other lead acid – of equivalent capacity, lithium batteries take up less physical space than lead batteries. The difference isn’t as substantial as the weight difference, but it’s worth to consider it.

Discharge

Lead acid battery: theoretically dischargeable up to 80%. However, if discharged in this way every day its life is reduced to less than a year. The recommended daily discharge percentage is therefore 30%.

Lithium battery: theoretically dischargeable up to 100%. However, the recommended percentage of discharge in daily use is 80%.

Life span

Lead acid battery: on average 250 discharge cycles at 80% (after 200 cycles there is a capacity of less than 80% of the nominal value) and 1200-2000 discharge cycles if discharged daily at 30%.

Lithium battery: up to 1000 discharge cycles at 80% and 6000 discharge cycles if discharged daily at 30% (3/4 times greater than the lead acid battery without losing its effectiveness over time).

Recharge

Lead acid battery: To be recharged, it needs more energy than that supplied. This process, which is necessary to gasify the battery and mix the acid inside, heats the lead bat

tery and evaporates the water inside, hence the need to top up the battery with water.

Furthermore, partial charges damage the battery and total recharges require even very long recharging times (8 hours). Finally, the ambient temperature affects the effectiveness of its recharging (it risks not being fully charged in cold weather and gasifying too much in hot weather).

Lithium battery:

it can be fully or partially recharged with very short recharging times. It needs a particular charger, an unsuitable charger could irreparably damage the battery.

Safety for the environment

Lead acid battery: The presence of lead (carcinogen-teratogen) requires a special disposal that follows precise methods to avoid environmental contamination. Furthermore, the development and emission of hydrogen during its last charging phase determines a potential and risky explosiveness. For these reasons, its use in the food industry for example is not allowed.

Lithium battery: it has no emissions and there is no risk of contaminating the environment, it is suitable for all applications.

Maintenance

Lead acid battery: high-cost maintenance programs must be adopted including checking the density of the liquid, cleaning the elements and poles from oxide, top-up water if necessary. In addition, the structure costs must be considered, that is the space dedicated to its recharging and the cost for the gas disposal system which provides for special ventilation systems.

Lithium battery: It has no maintenance costs, no structure costs, no gas emissions and does not require water.

In the paper, cardboard, tissue, wire, rubber and converting industries, the use of both battery technologies is allowed.

Renova’s battery driven roll pushers

Moviroll reel pushers of Renova allow you to easily and safety move cylindrical objects of small and large dimensions without any. Moviroll roll pushers are ideal for cardboard, paper and tissue paper reels, wire and calble reels or drums, vehicles, etc.

Renova offers pneumatic or battery-powered models. Renova have been equipping the Moviroll systems only with 24V or 48V lithium batteries since 2014. Infact the first Moviroll was designed in 2014 and until that moment the roll pushers available on the market were only equipped with lead acid batteries.

Moviroll is the pioneer of reel pushers equipped with an eco-friendly lithium battery, completely free of any pollutant and therefore safer for the operator and the environment.

For this reason, Moviroll battery-powered roll pushers can guarantee higher performance:

Long charge of the battery: Battery autonomy 3-5 working shifts (60-120 rolls moved)

Rapid battery recharge: Maximum 4 hours required

Long life span of the battery: More than 500 recharges

Eco-friendly and plug&play lithium battery: Safe for the environment and for the operator, easy replace of the battery in 5 seconds

Zero maintenance: Designed to last over the time while maintaining high performance

2 year warranty applied also to the battery: Renova battery charger supplied

Moviroll MRE battery-powered reel pushers offer the advantage of free movement without constraints of pneumatic connections or electrical cables.

Compact and easy to handle, but at the same time sturdy, they can also operate where forklifts cannot (for example close to the production lines or in the reels/loads storage spaces).
